How does Viagra work?

Postby dc9 » Sat Feb 13, 2016 12:55 am

Hi! I'm just curious about how Viagra (and other Ed meds) work. If a man takes a pill, will he "automatically" get an erection when the effect of the pill sets in and then be erect for quite some time (even without any sexual stimulation) OR is some kind of sexual stimulation needed to cause an erection? Will he get soft if the stimulation stops and/or he orgasms/ejaculates or does the erection last after that for some more "fun"?

Thanks!

Stimulation is required and when the stimulation stops the erection goes away unless further stimulation resumes. It's almost like a normal response for me except my recovery period is less and the viagra ceases to be effective after a few hours.

I've been on daily Cialis for about a year now. I never had a problem with getting an erection with normal stimulation, but I had difficulty maintaining an erection long enough to go to completion. It was like the opposite of premature ejaculation. With the daily Cialis, it's like being 20 again. Like the poster above, I don't get an erection unless stimulated. Unlike that poster, the effects don't fade after a few hours.

I did have a side effect initially. I had some minor back pain for the first few weeks after starting the drug, but I decided the benefits were more than worth the pain. After a month or so, the pain went away.

It puts nitrous oxide back in your blood.

With the proper level of nitrous oxide, the "valve" restricting blood from your penis can work properly, allowing your erection to grow/be maintained/not leak away.

It doesn't cause arousal; it just helps keep the blood where it belongs to allow you to function.

I'm on Cialis daily and I agree with the above in that it makes me function like when I was twenty. Everything just seems normal. However I'd like to know if young men taking it have more exceptional results.

Here's a good link http://science.howstuffworks.com/viagra1.htm

Nitric (Not to be confused with nitrous) Oxide is a vasodialator that allows increased blood flow to the area. It is released by sexual arousal to initiate the process. Viagra works a little later in the process.

How does Viagra work?

Postby dc9 » Tue Mar 15, 2016 11:15 am

If one starts to use Viagra type drugs to enhance erections, will the natural erection ability diminish or stay the same?

I mean, is the effect of the Viagra drug an "add on" to the natural ability to achieve an erection or does it replace the body's natural "signal" to start an erection?

If I use some kind of Viagra drug to enhance performance or duration of erections at special occasions when longer or repeated sessions are desired; will it lessen my "natural" ability to get erect during our regular love making (where Viagra is not needed)?

I don't know if this makes sense, but if anyone understand my thoughts, if you would share any knowledge/experience in the area it will be much appreciated.

Thank you!

dc9, you bring up something I have never thought about. My guess is that it's an add on and would not alter natural ability. I think it is probably true though that if a man uses an ED drug all the time then quits using it it will seem like his natural ablity has been diminished but only because he has become accustomed to the enhanced effect of the ED drug.

I'm not a doctor or pharmacist, so I can only speak for myself. When I went off Cialis for a week, I still had erections just like I always had before taking the drug. I took the drug for the help I needed to go to completion, and am still taking it for that reason. So, yes, it helps when I take it, but didn't take away what I had before when I started taking it, I just went back to the way I was.

I take Viagra not because my body has physical difficulty producing an erection but because psychologically I often suffer from performance anxiety and lack of arousal. Viagra does not make a guy (e.g. me) more aroused, and a guy needs arousal to get erect (generally speaking), but Viagra can be critical in maintaining an erection once it's there and thereby helps resolve performance anxiety. If I'm aroused enough, I can have PIV sex to completion without Viagra, which I did the other night, but normally I use it and it makes all the difference in the world on nights where I want to have sex but have worries or distractions in my mind that would otherwise make an erection tenuous. So, Viagra can aid a guy whose arousal is there but somewhat weak by helping him maintain an erection once it is there, but if lack of arousal is the main problem, that's a problem that will probably need to be addressed some other way.
