I would have been really tempted to go get a Bible from her shelves, bring it back to the counter and open it to Song of Solomon and exclaim "Whew!" If she asked, I would have said "I was glad to see SoS here. However, If you think Sheet Music is pornographic, then if you have a razor, I will help you remove SoS from your Bibles. Shall I fetch the rest while you cut?"
If you feel you need to tell someone how wise you are,
they probably already know.

Agree with KW. The key is to speak respectfully. Most places might not stock something, but would order it for you if you ask. Or you could just cut out the middle man and just order it yourself.

Wow. Just...wow. This made me really mad, then really sad. Of course it's easy enough to order from Amazon, but what about the many people who go into this store or others like it looking for resources to help their marriage and never even know books like Sheet Music exist? The conspiracy of silence strikes again. :(

Our local Christian Bookstore has a "Leman Section". Good for us, bad for you.

"Sheet Music" is a lot less explicit than lots of other stuff out there -- and includes details only where they edify (IMO).

That's just a shame.

Or just as bad, if they ask for that (probably recommended) book at that store and are made to feel ashamed for requesting "porn". :(

WOW that really is sad. Some of these Christian stores are super conservative and won't carry stuff like that, so it doesn't surprise me, but it is sad when I hear about things like this.

I was super happy to get a free copy of sheet music on Kindle a week or two ago!

I missed out on that! By the time I heard about it being offered free a couple weeks ago, Kindle had already gone back to regular pricing. :( I didn't bother then, since I already have an actual hardcopy. Gotta be quick on the trigger with some of those Kindle freebies!

I remember as a 70s teenager, our Christian bookstore wouldn't display the Christian rock music (Keith Green, Phil Keaggy, 2nd Chapter of Acts), but they would special order it for you and keep it under the counter. In other words, it was treated like porn.

Having spent a good portion of my adult life in Grand Rapids, MI where Zondervan is located and their Family Christian Stores are all over the place (and their locations are huge), the Christian bookstores here are pathetic and weak. The CD and DVD section takes up 2/3rds of the store and the remaining third split pretty evenly between Christian trinkets and tchotchkes (yes, I looked it up) and books, all of it crammed into 1000 square feet. The book selection is at best pathetic with far too much of the shelves devoted to biographical or current events books than books on spiritual topics, commentaries, or Bible studies. Even the Bible section was limited. I commented to my wife that it hardly seems like a bookstore at all. I don't know what the future holds for the brick and mortar bookstore, but I'd just as soon not shop at a "bookstore" like that again. Amazon it just too convenient (though I have to discipline myself) and I'm trying to make the transition to eBooks anyway.

To the point of the OP, it is a shame that, once again, God's fan club here on Earth seems far more adept at squelching the liberation found in God's Holy Word than it is in actually promoting what God's Word actually says. Then again, these stores tend to pander more to Churchianity than they do Christianity. Amazon may not be a Christian company, but I'd rather give them my money than stores who use "Christian" as a marketing gimmick.

Yeah, it is sad. I don't know if it makes a difference, but the store is owned by a Mennonite Christian family... aren't mennonites more conservative?

But yes, the worst part wasn't that they didn't have it, and wouldn't order it... but rather the fact that they made me feel like a "bad person" for asking about it.

Good thing I had already read the book and know how good it is!! :P

I would have HATED it if my sister had gone in on her own, on her pastor's and MY recommendation, and been told the same thing!

Mennonites are about 1 step to the left of Amish.

I am especially tired of the hypocrisy of Christian organizations like that. I remember when a favorite christian comedian of mine got a divorce (actually I think his wife left him) and Christian stores all around pulled his resources and refused to sell his stuff anymore. I realize this is different than the material being too graphic in their opinion, but I'm just tired of the judgementalism and legalism and oppression that has ruled this area for so long. All of the positions for hypocrite have been filled, there are no more openings, we have enough of them. </rant>

I should preface this with the disclosure that I haven't attended a Mennonite church since I was living with my parents.

Having grown up in a Mennonite church, they can be as different as any other denomination. Some Mennonite churches are pretty much Amish with electricity (or not) while some would be indistinguishable most other denominations. Growing up in a rural area we kind of had a shared youth group among a dozen or so churches. In the summer we'd have girls in shorts and t-shirts laughing and playing around with girls in plain dresses (no zippers) and head coverings. The only real difference between the two is that you could sometimes get a date with one of the girls in shorts, but the girls in the head coverings told funnier jokes and were better read. There are Mennonite churches that are very free during worship (e.g. raised hands and modern music) and there are Mennonite churches who sing every hymn (only hymns) as a funeral dirge and their hymnals use shape notes to teach people how to sing. For the most part, they're committed to some core doctrines such as the inerrancy of scripture, salvation by faith, and believer's baptism (with mode of baptism usually left to the individual church or to the individual believer), but they also hold some additional ones such as pacifism and refusing to swear an oath (which is why public statements starting with "I swear to..." often come with the word "affirm").

The choice to remove the book was probably more of a function of the conservative nature of the owners than necessarily of the Mennonite church.

Maybe the picture of naked feet on the cover was too much for them...??

I don't know, it's a stretch. It seems odd to me that it was so looked down upon.

Out of curiosity, did you happen to see which books on married Christian sexuality they DID carry?

I live right on the edge of the largest concentration of Amish/Mennonite in the country. Actually the word Mennonite means virtually nothing as far as stuff like that goes. It is a huge spectrum which spans everything from basically Amish with electricity and black only cars (old order Mennonite actually will not use either cars or electricity and their differences from Amish are only in doctrinal issues), to makeup/jewelry, shorts, bikini wearing totally mainstream Christians who happen to be pacifist, and everything in the middle.

That being said, most of the Mennonite book stores that I am familiar with cater to the more conservative crowd of Mennonites. The more mainstream Mennonites find that regular Christian bookstores meet their needs just fine. Extremely conservative ones find most ot the mainstream Christian fare to be liberal and worldly in nature and not suitable for their families. I suspect you were in one of this type. Just received Sheet Music in the mail.
Looking forward to reading it. Nice to hear so many people lifting it up as an excellent resource. I actually bought it because of the recommendations of so many people on TMB.

Nope. They wore modern fashions and the lady was wearing jeans and a sweater.

I don't remember what all she suggested... but they had "Five Love Languages" and the "Every _______ (Man/woman/etc) Battle", "Love and Respect", etc.
