Meds and sex drive

Postby reillyj » Thu Feb 22, 2018 5:46 pm

Just weighing in on a couple meds that i and H took and have stopped, that we suspected lowered our libido.

H was rx'd Flomax for BPH. He didn't like the S/E's (stuffy nose, etc.) and i had read online (good ol' Dr. Google) of some having sexual difficulties with the drug. One well known was retrograde ejaculation. I had brought up to his Urologist the libido killing S/E's and he said it didn't, that he'd never heard of that. Well..don't believe doctors if you bring up an S/E and they say they've never heard of that particular one in regard to a certain med.

I researched other men's experience of Flomax and indeed, lower to non existent sex drive was high up on the list. I took him off of it myself (he's on daily low dose Cialis which he's responding much better to and w/o the negative S/E's) and sure enough, his libido went up. And this is a man on TRT so there wasn't any real reason not to have a relatively good sex drive.

On to me. I was put on Singulair for breathing difficulties. Well the S/E's on that are long despite quite a few people reassuring me they've had no difficulties with it. I went off of it for psychiatric S/E's, i have bipolar and i suspect it made it worse (anxiety is a huge S/E on this med) and also i SUSPECT that it dampened my desire. A Google search will come up with just about anything you want to hear but i did see a study where women, esp women over 50, DID have that S/E. to find something to help with bronchial inflammation that won't make me gain weight or kill my libido. It's only been 2 days off the med so hopefully things will change.

I was on SYNTHETIC HRT which i would never ever recommend to anyone (especially bipolars) because it eventually would have killed me but i dearly miss the skyrocketed libido. It CHANGED EVERYTHING in our marriage (meaning it changed ME. i wasn't a refuser but somewhat of a gatekeeper) Now that i'm back to struggling again with libido, i use the knowledge i gained from being a HD, despite the fact that i am having difficulty with orgasms and desire. I will not refuse my H unless i am not feeling well (and he wouldn't push it, either, he's just not the sort) but anyway, the object of this post is to encourage people to take a close look at their meds and some of the lesser known S/E's. I do feel for people that HAVE TO take those kind of meds.

I have a family member who was having arrythmia while on Singulair and an inhaled powdered steroid, Asmanex. We had to find something else.

I found a few people who had good results with omega 3's. We use Krill Oil EFA's from Swanson. If she does not have these she can be in need of her rescue inhaler often. I ran out and didn't reorder very quickly and we learned the hard way.

We also give her 2000 of timed release vitamin C, Magnesium Citrate and Vitamin D.

Her usual need for a rescue inhaler is maybe once a month if consistent with these supplements.

Your mileage may vary, so check with your doctor to make sure none of these will be adverse for you.
When I told my hubby it's too bad he couldn't have a wife who had both a dirty mind and a clean house, he said he'd far prefer the former.

DW has COPD, smokes, is on Oxygen and a number of different meds, the s/e alone increase her stress & anxiety. It has been over 5 years since we had S/R. We were born in 1943 & 1937.

She wants to move thinking all our problems will be gone. We are living solely on SSI, another cause for her stressing.

Pray for our stresses and needs.

I have been on Cymbalta for nerve pain for almost two months and it definitely has drastically lowered my libido and makes it hard to reach orgasm and sometimes ejaculation doesn’t feel as good or powerful. Easier to ML in the morning than at night (higher T helps I guess, and I take the pill after breakfast daily so it is more out of my system perhaps).
