The age your mother went on menopause

Postby blushingwife » Sat Jun 16, 2012 6:39 am

Have you ladies found that you reached menopause around the same age your mother did?
Or it there no connection?

I was talking to my mom yesterday, and her periods finally ceased around the age of 52.
I also know that my paternal grandmother, had her last baby at the age of 47.
Does that mean that I have about 18 more years before I reach menopause?

I don't remember how old my mom was, but I'm pretty sure she was in her 50's. I went into menopause when I was 36, but it was coincidentally immediately after I had my tubes tied so I still think there was some correlation there (although the OB-GYN who did the surgery denies it).

Oh, I ask because I am actually looking forward to it!!

See, between heavy & painful periods + worrying about birth control failing, menopause sounds like heaven!
Also, if I am like my mom, a bit of hot flashes is all I need to worry about. She never experienced the loss of libido or lubrication.

Although my mom would have discussed menopause with me, she HATED sex  so she never would have told me anything about libido or lubrication issues. She did say once that she was glad she no longer wanted or needed to have sex (this was when she was in her 60's). And yes, not menstruating is a wonderful thing - I haven't bought a tampon since 1997! Maybe you could get your tubes tied like me - then you wouldn't have to worry about birth control OR periods! (I can hook you up with my OB-GYN for that "special" version of tubal ligation. )

If only the prospect of being cut open to do something which my husband could easily have done in an oupatient setting, did not sound so unfair to me... I would totally give you call!

Yeah, my mom has told me more than I ever wanted to know about her "personal business" Which is why I have all this info...

My mom is 53, almost 54, and still peri-menopausal. Several of her sisters didn't "officially" reach menopause until after 60.

So basically, I'm probably looking at another 30 years of fertility.

Sarah's mom had like 8 years of peri-menopause/menopause from late 40s to mid 50s.
In that time she had some pretty bad behavior and attitudes. Sarah dreaded that kind of result for herself.

She's had a few children around and past age 40, start of menopause symptoms around age 50, now it's in pretty full swing in her early 50s.
But the cool thing is that Sarah takes really good care of her body, exercises, keeps the extra weight off, eats excellent nutrition, and takes lots of supplements. This seems to really keep the menopause "troubles" in check. Don't know how that'd work for others but it does for her! :D

I wish I knew... too late to ask. I know she had weird periods beginning in her late 30's. I remember seeing a lab report on the kitchen island for blood work including a pregnancy test. (shock cuz she had her tubes tied)

My mother was still having periods when she died at age 45. I was a little older when I went through it.

My mom didn't do any HRT either. Menopause was pretty easy on her.

I'm planning on getting an ablation to deal with the heavy periods.

My mom did not have anything either. I was really happy to hear that!

Mamame, do ablations help with the heavy periods permanently or need to be done again regularly. I need it done yesterday!

I went straight onto HRT because of my young age at the time - I was worried that I would turn "old" prematurely and/or grow a mustache. I wish I'd gone on bioidenticals right away instead of that evil Premarin, but it was really hard to find bioidenticals and doctors who would prescribe them back then. When I'm not taking supplemental estrogen I get terrible hot flashes and mood swings which I'd rather avoid.

You know my mom didn't do HRT either. I know she did have night sweats tho. hot flashes? I don't remember. Up until she divorced after 30+ yrs of marriage, I *think* they still had sex on occasion. Kinda hard to know when you have a father who was ALWAYS chasing after a girl in a skirt.

I can only pray that I have a relatively smooth menopause like my mom did, just wish I knew when she started it.

I believe my mom hasn't had a period in at least 5+ years, and she's 62. I'd have to ask her when the process started. Maybe around 50?

For about 85% of people its a one time thing. Some need a second one.
